Rencontré au milieu des années 1990, je me souviens d’Eric Deleporte jouant sous pseudo (Barbario) des reprises lo-fi des Kinks ou de Timbuk 3 avec les Squad Femelle, soit sa compagne Sarah Froning et leurs amis Dominique A et Françoiz Breut, tandis que le label Lithium rénovait la chanson française avec ses premières sorties (Dominique A, mais aussi Diabologum, Mendelson, Jérôme Minière, Bertrand Betsch…). A la fin des années 1990, après le séminal  « Icy Morning In Paris » (1994), Eric et Sarah (alias Perio, donc) partirent vivre aux Etats-Unis (Chicago, New-York), d’où ils envoyaient de belles cartes postales musicales : « Medium Crash » (1998) et « The Great Divide » (2007), creusant leur sillon folk-rock, entre americana (Neil Young, Harry Smith) et indie-rock (Violent Femmes, Feelies, Pixies, Sonic Youth), s’ouvrant même à la pop la plus mélodieuse et élégante (façon The Shins), sans jamais pourtant se trouver facilement apparenté à un genre particulier, mais développant leur style, entre mélodie et inquiétude, douceur et brutalité, de plus en plus singulier, à mesure aussi que le projet devenait celui de Eric seul.  Car Sarah est restée aux Etats-Unis tandis qu’Eric est rentré depuis quelques années en France, à Paris, où il travaille en tant que graphiste pour une maison d’édition. Un ai parfois enfantin, parfois comme hanté, oscillant entre une extrême discrétion et ce qui a tout l’air d’être de l’hyper-sensibilité : on retrouve les traits de caractères d’Eric Deleporte sur son nouvel album, au format impeccable (32 minutes, ni trop long, ni trop court), le plus beau selon moi de Perio, un des disques que j’écoute le plus en cette rentrée.

Enregistré notamment avec Christian Quermalet, dans un hameau de la Creuse, ce nouvel album ouvre portes et fenêtres, laisse les voix, instruments et amplis résonner, et distille avec parcimonie, précision et subtilité les mélodies, les fréquences, les sensations, pour impressionner de manière profonde et durable ses auditeurs. Chansons de solitude (mais la pop, depuis les Beatles, ne s’adresse-t-elle pas d’abord aux cœurs solitaires ?), mais très bien accompagnées (batteries suaves, boites à rythmes chaleureuses, basses rondes, profondes ou bondissantes, orgues plein de grain), les huit chansons, ballades ou petites cavalcades, qui nous prennent ici par la main se présentent comme autant de graines (« Seeds », plage numéro 1) plantées dans le cœur, qui se développent en fruits doux et sucrés, arbres dans lesquels se nicher. Arpèges de guitares claires ou accords légèrement syncopés, orgues Hammond en contrepoint mélodiques (rappelant le très beau « The Jim Side » des Married Monk), grésillement électriques posant des atmosphères nocturnes aussitôt contredites par des mélodies lumineuses, les arrangements, aussi ingénieux que discrets, se fondent dans les chansons avec délicatesse rehaussant le chant haut d’Eric, aussi précis que fébrile, presque féminin. Ces chansons de solitude, d’appels attendus qui ne viendront pas (« Woman uncalled »), transforment de manière assez magique le plomb en or, la désolation en chant, renversant la mélancolie en danse, rock’n’roll codéinés (« Whoopadoop ») ou sabbats élégiaques au clair de lune (« Moonburt »). Par un étrange effet boomerang (« It always comes back to me » chante Eric sur « W »), ces trente minutes avec Perio nous donnent à reconsidérer sa discographie, comme un écho (qui aurait fait le tour des montagnes), une réverbération, un délai. La dernière chanson alterne une plainte (le narrateur dit : « I don’t see it coming ») avec son réconfort (un chœur lui répond « It’s just a matter of time »). Transformant sa solitude en multitude, Perio compte désormais autant de compagnons que d’auditeurs. C’était juste une question de temps.
